How to make a grand entrance

From inviting boardwalks to bold feature walls, modern entranceways have transcended the traditional role as a mere threshold. They now serve as a defining feature that sets the stage for the rest of the home's design.

We spoke with Nigel Watson of Landmark Homes Hamilton & Waikato to uncover how homeowners can create striking entranceways that welcome and wow in equal measure.

The evolution of entranceways

In recent years, the design philosophy surrounding home entranceways has undergone a significant transformation. No longer just a passageway for entering and exiting, entranceways have become pivotal design elements that enhance both the aesthetic appeal and the overall value of the home. This shift reflects broader trends in architecture and interior design, where the functionality of a space is harmoniously blended with artistic expression to create environments that are both inviting and impactful.

A prime example of this innovative approach is evident in Landmark Homes Hamilton & Waikato’s Te Kowhai Showhome. The entranceway begins on a timber boardwalk that leads visitors past attractive landscaping to the front door. Above the doorway exposed beams not only add structural elegance but also create continuity with the outdoor living area at the rear of the home.

Inside, the entrance features a welcoming alcove adorned with dark wood and a timber batten feature wall, adding depth and character to the space. This nook serves as a functional area for placing keys or bags, while also providing a moment to pause and appreciate the careful integration of design elements.

Nigel says there is a growing interest in making entranceways practical with stylish storage solutions or seating areas. “We’re incorporating clever designs, like built-in benches or discreet storage, that make these spaces more useful without compromising the overall aesthetic,” he says.

This approach to entranceway design not only sets the tone for the rest of the home but also elevates the perceived value of the property. By investing in the aesthetics of the entrance, homeowners can make a compelling first impression that captivates and welcomes visitors.

Design elements that create impact

Modern entranceways have become an opportunity for homeowners to make bold design statements, and this often starts with the incorporation of feature walls and statement pieces.

This is showcased beautifully in Landmark’s Whitianga Showhome, where a dramatic staircase provides an eye-catching focal point as soon as you step inside. The staircase, framed by slatted black wood panels, draws the eye upward, creating a sense of vertical space and intrigue.

“In some homes, the staircase can be a hidden element, but when you’ve invested in a feature staircase like this, it makes sense to showcase it from the entranceway,” says Nigel. “It’s a statement piece that sets the tone for the entire home.”

This feature not only defines the entranceway but also creates a striking visual experience. The use of clean lines and contrasting materials adds depth and texture, ensuring that the entrance feels both spacious and cohesive.

Another rising trend is the use of larger, grander front doors, which instantly elevate the entrance. “We’re seeing more clients choosing oversized doors, often with glass panels or pivot designs, to create a sense of grandeur and immediate welcome as soon as you approach the home,” says Nigel.

Blurring boundaries

Material choices play an equally crucial role in shaping the ambience and aesthetic of an entranceway. In a recent Landmark Homes Design and Build project, a bold brick feature wall is the highlight, seamlessly extending from the exterior façade into the interior. This design choice creates a striking visual impact, blurring the lines between indoors and out.

“Bringing exterior materials inside, like we did with the brick wall, creates a strong design continuity that adds warmth and texture,” says Nigel. By integrating materials like brick, wood, and glass, homeowners can create an entrance that makes a statement of elegance and modernity, offering a glimpse into the design themes that flow through the rest of the property.

Lighting the way

Lighting is another key element in transforming an entranceway into a visually appealing and functional space.

The thoughtful use of natural and artificial light can dramatically impact how the space feels, creating a welcoming and memorable first impression. “Natural light, whether through large windows, skylights, or sidelight panels around the door makes the space feel open and inviting,” says Nigel. This not only enhances the visual appeal but also connects the interior to the outdoors, offering glimpses of surrounding views or landscapes.

Incorporating well-placed artificial lighting adds another layer of depth. A statement pendant light or some subtle wall sconces can highlight architectural features while providing practical illumination.

“Pendant lights are a great way to add character without overwhelming the space,” says Nigel. These lighting choices can also draw attention to key focal points, ensuring the entrance remains functional and visually striking both day and night.

Framing the view

Incorporating views into the design of an entranceway is also powerful tool for enhancing its impact. A well-thought-out entrance can frame a captivating view, extending the visual experience beyond the front door.

“When planning a home, you’ve got to think in 3D,” says Nigel. “Designing an entranceway is an opportunity to frame something special – whether it’s a garden, a distant landscape, or a feature within the home – so that the outside becomes part of the entrance experience.”

This design approach ensures that the entranceway is not a closed-off area, but instead serves as a bridge between the inside and outside. Windows, particularly sidelight or transom windows, can be positioned to offer glimpses of the surrounding environment, creating a sense of flow and openness.
