For Rachel and Richard, building a home was about more than just bricks and mortar – it was about designing a space that fit their lifestyle, both now and in the future. With their daughters leaving for university, they saw an opportunity to create a home that would suit their next chapter – a peaceful rural retreat with adaptable spaces for family, friends, and future possibilities.
After years of homeownership, renovations, and even a previous build, Rachel and Richard had a clear idea of what they wanted – a home with personality, something that stood apart from the ordinary.
“We’d spent many evenings talking about what we wanted in our dream home,” says Richard. “One of the main things was for the house to have a design that felt unique and different.
“We looked at other houses that had been built in the region, and we both agreed that Landmark really stood out from the rest,” says Richard. “They had that extra flair – that point of difference.”
With their daughters moving into adulthood, Rachel and Richard wanted a home that suited their next chapter – an adaptable space that felt open and welcoming when family and friends came to stay, but cosy and comfortable when it was just the two of them.
Flexibility was key. They needed distinct living zones – space for guests, potential grandkids, and perhaps even an Airbnb – without sacrificing connection or flow. High ceilings, open-plan living, and seamless indoor-outdoor spaces were essential to make the most of their breathtaking rural views.
From the very first meeting with Landmark Homes Waikato & Hamilton New Homes Consultant Amanda Webber, they knew they were in the right hands. “She just understood us and got what we were wanting,” says Richard. “That initial one-on-one contact was really important for us.”
Using Landmark’s Design and Build service, their vision began to take shape. “We had little sketches and stuff, and basically, it went from that point there,” Richard explains. “They took what was in our heads and turned it into an initial design concept.”
The result was a clever ‘pod’ design, separating the home into three distinct zones to suit their lifestyle both now and in the future.
At the centre of the home is the main living space, designed for gathering, relaxing, and entertaining. With a three-metre-high stud and oversized joinery, the space feels light, open, and perfectly connected to the surrounding landscape.
And then there’s the kitchen – a real showstopper designed by Rachel herself.
With dramatic black cabinetry, a herringbone-tiled splashback, and floating timber shelves, it’s bold but still warm and inviting. A hidden scullery sits behind the main kitchen, keeping the space looking sleek while providing extra prep and storage. And for entertaining? A stylish bar nook with built-in wine storage adds just the right touch.
The kitchen flows effortlessly into the dining and lounge areas, where a gas fireplace creates a cosy focal point. Whether it’s just the two of them or a full house, this space is designed to bring people together.
Tucked away on one side of the home is the guest and family wing, designed to be as flexible as possible. Whether it’s for visiting family, future grandchildren, or even an Airbnb, Rachel and Richard wanted a space that could adapt over time. “If we ever decide to run a B&B, we can just lock this end off,” says Richard. “And if the girls come home with grandchildren later on, they’ll have their own space to stay.”
This self-contained wing has two queen-sized bedrooms, a private lounge area, and a kitchenette, giving guests plenty of comfort while still feeling connected to the rest of the home. The bathroom is finished to the same high standard as the rest of the house, with stylish tiling and brushed brass fittings that add a touch of luxury.
It’s a space that can be private when needed but still feels like part of the home—a perfect balance of independence and connection.
On the other side of the house, Rachel and Richard’s master suite is their own private retreat. The spacious bedroom, luxurious ensuite with floating concrete vanities, and walk-in wardrobe make this wing feel like a peaceful escape from the main living areas. Large windows are perfectly placed to take in the rural views, bringing in plenty of natural light while maintaining a sense of privacy.
Beyond the master suite, a breezeway leads to the garage, which also houses Richard’s man cave – a space for hobbies, relaxation, and potentially a home business.
“It was important that I could still run maybe my business in that garage zone,” says Rachel, “and Richard could have a man cave.”
Every detail in Rachel and Richard’s home has been carefully considered – not just for style, but for practicality too. The materials, colours, and finishes create a seamless blend of modern sophistication and relaxed, easy living.
The polished concrete flooring is a standout feature, and one that Richard took the lead on. With his background in the concrete industry, he managed the pour, finishing, and polishing, working closely with Landmark to make sure everything aligned with the build schedule. “They were great to work with,” he says. “I coordinated the work, and they made sure it all fitted into the bigger picture.”
To soften the industrial feel of the concrete flooring, and tie in with the rural surroundings, the couple added a subtle green tint. The result is a striking yet natural finish that’s easy to maintain, full of character, and completely unique to their home. “When people walk in, they always comment on the floor,” says Richard. “It’s different – it’s got a real presence.”
That same hands-on approach extended to other areas of the home. In the bathrooms, Richard built custom floating concrete vanities, bringing an architectural edge to the design. “I didn’t want a standard bathroom unit,” he says. “I wanted something unique.” In the kitchen, he crafted floating timber shelves, adding warmth and texture against the bold black cabinetry.
The home’s grand entryway also reflects their attention to detail, featuring a copper-hued front door that ties beautifully into the kitchen’s design. The warm, metallic tone brings a touch of elegance while maintaining the home’s earthy, natural feel.
For Rachel and Richard, having the opportunity to incorporate these personal touches was key. Landmark worked with them every step of the way, offering guidance and flexibility to bring their ideas to life.
“They understood what we were trying to do and helped us make it happen,” says Richard. “It really felt like a partnership.”
The result is a home that’s not just beautifully designed but deeply personal – a perfect blend of expert craftsmanship and hands-on creativity.
For Rachel and Richard, this home is more than just a place to live – it’s a carefully curated retreat, designed to evolve with them over time. Whether it’s hosting family, welcoming future grandchildren, or simply enjoying the peace and beauty of their surroundings, their home has been built to adapt to whatever comes next.
“We had a set budget, and Landmark worked with us to make sure we stayed on track,” says Richard. “The quality of the build, the craftsmanship – it’s all there.”
They were also impressed by Landmark’s approach to communication and problem-solving. “Any issue that came up, they were straight onto it,” he adds. “Nothing was ever too hard, and they really cared about getting things right.”
Now in their finished home, Rachel and Richard couldn’t be happier. “We are absolutely over the moon with what we and Landmark have created,” they say. “We’ve got friends who’ve been through here, seen what we’ve done, and are now building with Landmark themselves,” says Richard. “That says it all.”
