With a bustling port, thriving arts community, epic surf, and the wonderous Maunga of Mt Taranaki keeping watch over the vibrant city and its inhabitants, Taranaki is an undiscovered jewel in the North Island's crown.
We spoke to Landmark Homes New Plymouth & Taranaki franchise owner Scott Vile who is proud to build award-winning Landmark Homes in this beautiful region.
In 2019 Scott's vast experience combined with quality craftsmanship and an exceptional eye for detail saw the Landmark Homes New Plymouth & Taranaki team land four wins at the House of the Year Awards.
These wins included the New Home $600,000 – $750,000 (Gold Reserve and Category Winner) and the New Home $450,000 – $600,000 (Gold Reserve and Category Winner) award categories. The team was also named Franchise of the Year at the Landmark Homes' National Awards in 2017 and 2019.
But don't think this busy franchise is resting on its laurels. With more people wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of big-city living, Scott and his dynamic Landmark Homes team are always looking for new and innovative ways to help their clients build their dream homes in this nature-lovers paradise.
"A lot of people are moving to Taranaki to get away from the big city. The lack of traffic and great work/life balance is also a big draw card for many of our clients." Scott says.
But it's not just the incredible scenery that captures the hearts of those moving to Taranaki, the welcoming nature of the people who live there is also a big draw card.
"Taranaki is one of those places you really have to visit to understand exactly what makes it special," Scott says. "People come to the region for events like Womad, and that's when they discover just how friendly and welcoming everyone is here. Smaller towns mean you can really integrate yourself into a community."
With a thriving port and the local hospital attracting new staff from all over the country, opportunities are abound for professionals in this beautiful region.
With its increasing popularity, the New Plymouth & Taranaki Landmark franchise works closely with developers to ensure they are always ahead of the game regarding new land and development areas becoming available.
"We work with three main developers to keep our fingers on the pulse of what's available and what might be coming up. We always have our client's best interests in mind, so it's important that we are forward-thinking in our approach to building and what we can offer." Scott says.
Looking to the future, the franchise is excited to be starting work on a brand new Showhome. Located in the stunning Bell Block and set for its sparkling debut in November 2023, the team are crafting a pavilion-style home based on the Landmark Homes Lakeside Ready to Build plan.
"We're getting a lot of pavilion-styled homes being designed and built here," Scott says. "It's quite surprising because a lot of farmers have moved away from the traditional weatherboard home for more pavilion style using vertical weatherboard."
"With the new Showhome, we are adding a bit of Central Otago flair. We'll be using a lot of tongue and groove, cedar ceilings and course, making the most of the sun with the big pavilion window."
Quality and efficiency, whilst being cost-effective, are all part of the Landmark promise. And while the rest of New Zealand grapples with housing shortages and shaky prices, Taranaki has remained relatively stable, making it a great place to build.
So what advice would Scott give to people looking to build their dream home in Taranaki?
"It's all about the lifestyle here," Scott says. "There's always something to do. You're close to the Coastal Walkway. You've got beaches, cafes and art galleries on your doorstep; best of all, you don't have to waste your time battling traffic!"
