“The client asked us to design a home that would capture the views and also shelter the home from the prevailing northwest winds,” says Designer Debbie Clarke.
“As such, we designed a split-level, pavilion-style home with strategically placed, sized and shaped windows and openings. to suit both requirements.”
Shaped to suit
The H-shape footprint lent itself to a large outdoor space on both sides of the home, enabling the homeowner to have useable living spaces that are sheltered from the wind and elements all-year round.
The sloped site was used to create a unique two-storey style, housing the garage and storage space under the main family room and allowing the living spaces to overlook the lake and mountains.
Stepping up to the main entranceway, encased in famous Central Otago schist, this is a grand welcome to an equally grand interior space.
An expansive open-plan kitchen, dining/living and family area extends across the width of the home – a completely uninterrupted space, save for a low wall concealing the descending staircase to the garage below.

A personal touch
The Cardrona plan has been one of Landmark Homes’ most popular designs, and while it was created with a sloping section in mind, clients have since adapted the design to suit their own site and lifestyle requirements.
“One client moved the garage to the side, added an office and placed the entry next to the garage. Another opted for a sloping roof instead of the gable roof style, while another developed a smaller version with a granny flat below the living areas.
