TRANQUIL VIEWS OF THE MOUNTAINS

Crafted In Nature

This fantastic Landmark homes testimonial from Clutha will inspire you to begin designing your own Landmark home!

On an expansive valley floor – the babbling Clutha River a nearby neighbour and Central Otago’s alpine ranges a majestic backdrop – sits a stunning residence that looks as if it was crafted by nature itself.

Wrapped in the region’s famous schist stone, and accented with vertical cedar cladding, Landmark Homes Designer Debbie Clarke wanted to create a home that complemented its iconic surroundings and put those exceptional views of the valley front and centre.

The result is an expansive contemporary pavilion-style build that brought through the clients personalities, as well as their lifestyle requirements.

Comforting & contemporary

Designed and built by the Landmark Homes team, the intent was to produce a modern, yet functional, abode where every space and room had its purpose.

Based in a region that’s known for its extreme weather highs and lows, underflooring heating gives a sense of luxury as soon as you step through the front door. Once inside, the sense of warming envelops you further through the use of natural materials

Schist is used extensively as a feature in the living/dining/kitchen zones and encases a large fireplace in the centre of the open-plan living, giving the space instant ‘wow factor’.

Herringbone oak flooring gives texture to an otherwise neutral palette and the wood look is extended up through the cabinetry. The open-plan spaces are tied together through the use of jet-black window frames, doors, lighting and interior furnishings.

Made for living

For the chef, double self-cleaning ovens sit neatly inside a wall space and a central island, that is a perfect mix of wood and stone, creating a focal point around which conversations and catering can occur. A wall-hung slider conceals a spacious butler’s pantry, which includes ample storage and a separate dishwasher away from the entertaining area.

For those social gatherings at home, a designer bar has been included, and features a stylish wine rack and wine cooler for those famous Central Otago vinos. Built adjacent to an intimate nook alongside the North-facing glass sliders, it’s the perfect place to unwind as you soak in the tranquil views of the mountains.

The space smoothly connects to an open-air lounge with schist floor, a fireplace/pizza oven and roller blinds to ensure year-round use.

Large mirror glass windows are utilised in every corner of the home, providing a view to the world outside and bringing its beauty in. This effect is most apparent in the open-plan living area, and also in the bathrooms where narrow strip windows are used to maintain a level of privacy while also creating a haven of relaxation as you look out towards the towering mountains.

Cool, calm, creative

Rich colour sweeps through the home in shades of blue and aqua, reflecting the cool, fast waters of the Clutha River outside. From a geometric patterned feature wall in one of the bedrooms, to the dip-dyed curtains in the living area, the addition of these rich hues give an otherwise clean space a homely, welcoming feel.

Other practical considerations include an office space, sewing room and a well-equipped home gym that provides the comforts of a modern gym without leaving home.

Awarded bronze in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards for the Southern region, Landmark is thrilled with this home.

“For me, communication and management are crucial to bringing design projects like this to life. There are many considerations and challenges going into home builds, so it is important to be open and honest at all stages of the project.”
