An Entertainer’s Dream That Was Surprisingly Easy to Build

Steve and Jacqueline Dunne had owned their 1954 bungalow for nearly eight years, but the sweeping Auckland city views of the Titirangi site deserved a better, bigger house on it that was designed to take them in. So that’s exactly what they created! Demolishing that bungalow to build on a clean state…

The decision to go with Landmark wasn’t one Steve and Jacqueline took lightly, but it was an easy one in the end.

The couple interviewed a lot of Design and Build companies, but when it came to meeting Warwick Aldridge and the team at Landmark Auckland Central & West “we knew they were the right team for us,” remembers Steve.

Of course, they didn’t take the decision lightly – visiting a private home in Point Chev that Landmark had built, as well as other places the team had built. But it was the team’s nature and energy that drew them in the most.

“We just got a feeling they gave a damn! They listened to what we wanted to do, they wrote everything down, they visited our site – we really felt they were servicing us properly. Far more than the other companies we interviewed. I don’t just mean a little more, either, I mean a lot more. I cannot emphasise that enough.”

Warwick and his Project Manager came around to visit the site, and Steve felt reassured. “We’re about to spend $1.3million and we felt like we were going with a team that would invest our money properly.”

That attention to detail and care for what they do extended throughout the entire project, from the design to the build itself.

The consents were handled completely by Landmark, “I did nothing!” laughs Steve.

Design they were far more involved, of course. He and Jacqueline had been dreaming up what they wanted from their home for a long time – chopping things out of magazines and visiting the Home Ideas Centre in Parnell.

Armed with a scrapbook filled with ideas of what they wanted, the design process was easy, and the
came up with an initial design which was almost perfect. “We’d spent a lot of time getting the house how we wanted it. And bar one alteration they got it spot-on!”

That alteration? A late in the game adjustment, spotted by the builder on site, removing a wall from inside the house to better take advantage of the sweeping views of Auckland.

“When you walk up the stairs and into the lounge there’s no wall – so you step up and you can look out uninterrupted at that beautiful view,” explains Steve. “There was going to be a wall there but Craig the builder suggested we remove it. That advice was spot-on, I’m so glad we did!”

“The moral of the story is simply that everyone at Landmark gives a damn, from start to finish” he adds. And as a result, they have an outstanding home they couldn’t be happier with.

High spec, high quality and high tech

This professional couple wanted an entertainer’s home, and that’s exactly what they got, with a big open plan kitchen and living room on the second floor to take advantage of the spectacular Auckland views, flowing out onto a large covered deck that acts like a dining room.

With two high-spec bathrooms and bedrooms on the ground floor, top-quality fittings, a fully automated ‘smart’ house (including a garage that can be opened from anywhere in the world!) and 19mm thick solid timber floors the home oozes style and quality. “I’ve got a few builder friends who’ve come into the house and said ‘Wow, good build’. The quality is fantastic.”

When it came to the budget, getting what they wanted at a fair price was important to this couple.

“We started with a budget for a quality build and kept adding stuff. We wanted the best and we got the best,” reflects Steve.

This increase in the budget had nothing to do with the Landmark team, it was a personal decision by Steve and Jacqueline to further enhance their build. “Julie and Warwick made it very clear on what you get for your money from the outset and if you have a budget, they will design a home to fit.”

So, would they use Landmark again?

Steve and Jacqueline have a second build in mind, this time in Steve’s native Hawke’s Bay, and is seriously considering flying the boys down to build that one too! “We’ll just make it work” he laughs.

“You hear so many horror stories of building in the media, that the most surprising thing was how easy this build was. And if anybody walks up to me and says they’re going to build a house in West Auckland I would say, ‘Go with Landmark, and don’t go anywhere else.’ I really would.”
